Ion Chromatography Analysis
The stationary phase surface displays ionic functional groups (R-X) that interact with analyte ions of opposite charge. Ion-exchange chromatography can retain analyte molecules on the column based on coulombic (ionic) interactions. This type of chromatography can further subdivided into cation exchange chromatography and anion exchange chromatography. The ionic compound consisting of the cationic species M+ and the anionic species B- which can be retained by the stationary phase.
Typical applications using ion chromatography include:
- Determination of water chemistries in aquatic ecosystems
- Determination of sugar and salt content in foods
- Drinking water analysis for pollution and other constituents
- Isolation of select proteins
